THE PROFESSIONAL QUALITY OF LIFE SCALE (ProQOL): Compassion Satisfaction, Burnout and Compassion Fatigue/Secondary Trauma Scales. The ProQOL, the revised version of the Compassion Fatigue Self Test(Figley,1995)and the Compassion Satisfaction and Fatigue Test (Stamm & Figley, 1999, is made up of three separate scales, measuring Compassion Satisfaction–the pleasure you derive from being able to do your work well; Burnout–feelings of hopelessness and difficulties in dealing with work or in doing your job effectively; and Compassion Fatigue/Secondary Trauma–work-related, secondary exposure to extremely stressful events.
Taken together, the ProQOL measures a positive thing: professional quality of life. While the negative effects of caregiving should not be minimized, viewing it from a positive perspective, supporting professional quality of life, makes it easier for organizations to support positive system change to prevent or ameliorate the negative effects of care-giving and buttress the positive effects of providing care.
The accompanying manual includes Scale Definitions, Scale Construction Methods, Psychometric Information, Scoring, References and a Bibliography that covers both publications about the various editions of the ProQOL (including CFST and the CSF Scale) and a general reference list for construct of Compassion Fatigue/Secondary Traumatic Stress/Vicarious Traumatic Stress.
The ProQOL and its predecessors have been used in projects in more than 30 countries around the world. It is available in English, French, Spanish, German, and Hebrew. Other translations are invited.
