Faith in Health: Trauma, Substance Abuse, and HIV/AIDS: Strategies for a Faith-Based Response in Minority Communities - Presenters Donna Lee, M.S. and Elizabeth Vermilyea, M.A.
This program is focused on helping faith leaders understand the many effects of traumatic stress that put survivors of street crime, family abuse, and other trauma at higher risk for using alcohol and drugs, and for engaging in unprotected sexual contact with multiple partners. These risky behaviors, in turn, put trauma survivors at greater risk for developing HIV and AIDS. Using a trauma framework, a harm-reduction approach, and clear, myth-busting, easy-to-teach science, Faith in Health™ is a perfect addition to any Clergy or Health Minister’s tool kit. The slides, handouts, and teacher’s script enable any church, community-based program, or service-providing agency to make a difference in the lives of those at risk for HIV/AIDS.
