"Walking Miracles" is an extremely moving and effective tool for teaching survivors, family members and the general public about the long term effects of child sexual abuse. It presents an artful weave of dance, theater and survivor's stories that gets to the core of the experience in a way that less creative teaching materials cannot. The painful content is handled with great respect, and the ultimate message is one of hope, strength and empowerment.
Created for the stage in 1997 from stories shared in a group of six survivors, the piece has now been adapted to video to reach a wider audience. The script is drawn largely from the survivors' own words, enhanced by dance, poetry and an original musical score. Survivors, therapists, educators, and psychotherapists were involved in the development of the original production and in this unique video.
The video is structured in segments, which explore specific themes related to child abuse. In order to pace the emotional impact of the performance, the scenes alternate between difficult material and portrayals that empower and support the viewer. It is ideal for individual use as well as in group therapy settings.
Viewers may choose to watch the tape straight through in the order in which it is presented, or select specific segments. With either approach, time can be allowed for exploring responses to each segment before viewing others. It is recommended that the viewer be well-supported while viewing this video, as some of the material may be triggering or disturbing.
NOTE: "WALKING MIRACLES" IS NOT INTENDED FOR CHILDREN AND CONTAINS EXPLICIT DESCRIPTIONS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE.
