What do I need to request permission for?

You need to obtain permission from Sidran Institute to quote from or reuse materials found in our books or website. (Note: Permission to quote from books or audio-visual materials in our store that are published by others should be sought directly from those publishers.) Examples of material you might want to use include: prose selections, illustrations, forms and questionnaires, full chapters, video frames, and brochures. Examples of reuses include books, dissertations, articles, conference or workshop materials, student course packs, etc. Permission is required even if you do not intend to charge for the use of the material. There is no set number of words or lines that may be used without our written permission. If you are not sure, it is best to request permission anyway. Permission must be requested before you use the material.

If the material in the Sidran title is labeled “reprinted” or “reused with permission,” it means that we do not control the rights to the material and you are advised to contact the source cited directly.

For use in a book: include the publisher’s name, title of the book in which the excerpt will appear, the estimated print run, estimated length of the book, estimated cost of the book, and the languages rights you are requesting. How long will it take to process the permission request?

Generally it takes two to three weeks to process a request. If you are facing a deadline, please let us know and we will make every effort to accommodate you.

Will there be a fee involved?

We charge reasonable fees depending on the nature of the use. If you feel there is a reason that you should not be charged, please include that information with your request. If your request falls under the guidelines of Fair Use, we will let you know, and there will be no charge. The Sidran title must be properly cited in all cases, whether it is deemed fair use or not.

May I post your material on an Internet site?

Permission to post materials on an Internet site is processed the same way as print permission and a limited number of such permissions are granted. You must obtain written permission from Sidran Institute before you post the material. Permission is required even if your website can be accessed at no charge. Please be sure to include the URL where the material would be posted and information on how the material will be used.
