Toolwire and Sidran Institute Develop Simulations for Trauma-Informed Care

“Combining Toolwire’s expertise in the delivery of experiential learning simulations with Sidran’s proven Risking Connection program … will enable us …to positively impact many whose lives have been scarred by serious trauma.”

Pleasanton, CA (PRWEB) May 01, 2012

Toolwire has announced a partnership with the Sidran Institute to develop online courses using Toolwire Learnscape immersive learning simulations to help mental health and social services professionals work with trauma survivors (including Veterans and those suffering from physical and sexual violence) in ways that will reduce the time, trauma, and costs of healing.

Toolwire Learnscapes are “Day-in-the-Life” simulations that immerse students in photo-realistic settings with interactive video-characters and engaging storylines. Learnscapes create a “context” for learning to take place and require students to interact in real-world settings that demonstrate meaningful application of essential knowledge and skills. Along the way, “Natural Assessments” measure student performance and provide remediation.

These simulations will be based upon the Risking Connection® (RC) program, the flagship curriculum developed by the Sidran Institute, an organization specializing in collaborative, multidisciplinary education and resources to support those who have experienced trauma. Risking Connection® is the most affordable and first trauma-informed model developed with direct input from trauma survivors.

Trauma and related outcomes such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have been linked to lower use of preventive healthcare and poor physical health including chronic conditions. The direct and indirect costs of trauma-generated mental illness alone exceed $315 billion according to one NIMH report. Of all persons receiving treatment for substance abuse, 90% report histories of trauma.

“Risking Connection® is an evidence-informed, best-practice operating model that works in more settings than any other approach available today,” said Esther Giller, CEO of the Sidran Institute. “Through this exciting alliance, we will make Risking Connection® accessible to even more people across more disciplines; we are very pleased that Learnscapes will take our curriculum into a variety of settings where it can make such a difference.”

Through Sidran’s learning partner faculty, which will continue providing onsite contact and content, Risking Connection® programs will retain their critical, relational stance. Learnscapes, however, offer Sidran exciting benefits such as new ways to assess and measure outcomes and the ability to lower the cost of course delivery dramatically.

“In today’s tough economy, online learning—when it’s GOOD—only makes sense!” commented Elizabeth Power, CEO of EPower & Associates, a Sidran learning partner. “On-site trainings involve costs such as travel, booking a venue, delivery of supplies, compensating for no-shows, and more. These costs add up quickly. When we can reduce the cost to under $200 per person and still provide our learners a great experience from the location of their choice and at their own leisure, why not?”

“This is another great example of how Toolwire Learnscapes, when coupled with a proven instructional curriculum, are bringing learning to life in new and exciting ways,” commented Cameron D. Crowe, Executive Vice-President, Toolwire. “Combining Toolwire’s expertise in the delivery of experiential learning simulations with Sidran’s proven Risking Connection program, and extensive network in the field of trauma care, will enable us to scale training solutions with the power to positively impact many whose lives have been scarred by serious trauma.”
